As our group is still quite new and small in terms of volunteers, due to this our Group Leadership team and our Section Team acts as one body so that we can get things done effectively and as a team.

Team Description (Group Leadership Team)

Team Description (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Section Teams)

Section Teams make sure:

  • We’re planning and delivering a great programme
  • There’s a great culture for volunteers a members
  • Scouts is a safe environment for everyone
  • Admin gets done, such as keeping member records
  • Everyone’s kept in the loop

Who’s in the Team

  • Group Lead Volunteers
  • Leadership Team Members

Other volunteers are automatically members of this team because of their roles in Scouts:

  • Team Leaders of each Section Team
  • Team Leaders of any Group Leadership Team sub-teams. For example, Fundraising Team or Inclusion Team.

Who’s in the team

  • Section Team Leaders
  • Section Team Members
  • Young Leaders

Young Leaders are Explorers who volunteer in a Squirrel, Beaver, Cub or Scout Section Team. They play an active role in the Section, bringing fresh ideas and acting as positive role models for young people.

Team Tasks

The main task is to support the Group’s Sections

Make sure:

  • The views and ideas of young people shape decisions in the Group and its Sections.
  • Section Teams help young people and volunteers feel welcome and included and make changes (when necessary) so the environment and activities are accessible for everyone.
  • The demographics of young people and adults represent their local area.

Develop our volunteers:

  • Work with volunteers to share skills between Sections.
  • Make sure volunteers in the Group’s teams fulfil their safety and safeguarding responsibilities, including keeping up-to-date with changes and learning.

Team Tasks

Create a safe environment:

  • Create a safe environment for young people by sharing the Yellow Card with parents and carers, the Orange Card with Young Leaders, and display posters in your meeting place.
  • Check the programme can run safely.
  • Make sure adult:child ratios are always maintained and there’s a leader in charge for each session.
  • Brief helpers on the practical aspects of safety and safeguarding. This includes giving them a copy of the Yellow Card and confirming they’ve read and understood it. Make sure helpers know who to speak to if they have any concerns.
  • Create and review risk assessments.
  • Check there are first aid kits or supplies for all activities.
  • Review safety incidents and report them in the right way.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns directly to the UKHQ Safeguarding Team.

Plan and deliver a great programme:

  • Work with young people to plan and deliver a great programme, including nights away and adventurous activities, to help them achieve their Top Awards.
  • Find ways to continue to improve the programme.
  • Make good use of stakeholders in their community, including other Scout volunteers.

Make sure there’s a great culture for everyone:

  • Help young people and volunteers feel welcome and included, and make changes (when necessary) so the environment and activities are accessible for everyone.
  • Create leadership opportunities for Young Leaders.
  • Mentor volunteers in the team and help them develop, including Young Leaders.
  • Check volunteers behave positively and in line with Our Volunteering Culture.

If you would like to volunteer for a role in the Section team please use the Join us and select “Adult Volunteer” for the joining type.

Now you know what they do, now you can meet them.

“I began my Scouting journey as one of the first beavers of 12th Penarth back in 2013 when the group reopened, and my dad took on the role of Beaver Leader. I later transitioned to 1st Penarth for Scouts, where my dad was an assistant leader. During my time as a Scout, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, but fortunately, my group continued to meet online via Zoom and even organized a group camp. After the pandemic, I moved on to Explorers and joined Les Pugh’s Own ESU. Two years later, I felt the urge to help others and share the skills and knowledge I had gained. Since I lived nearby, I reached out to the closest group, which was 15th Cardiff on Sloper Road. About six months later, I reconnected with Andrew and Lorraine because the Scouts needed a leader with a Nights Away Permit for the All Wales Scout Camp 2024. I then began assisting at their group, 47th Cardiff, in Ely, and now I’ve taken on a Team Member role with the Scouts while continuing my own Scouting journey with Scout Network.” – Joshua
