The majority of Adults in Scouting are Volunteers. Other than a few regional support staff & many at HQ, none of us get paid to do our roles.
We are all different, but the reward is typically in knowing we make a difference & see lots of young people enjoy themselves whilst also developing many life skills they might otherwise not get the opportunity to experience.
Most of us have other regular, full time work & many other family commitments just like many of parents/carers, but our Leaders & other suppers find time to commit to supporting YOUR children, hence please respect this. Our time isn’t always available – although we are normally happy to help as much as we can, we might take a while to respond or do something occasionally….. despite appearances sometimes, we aren’t superhuman.
All Adults/Leaders that have regular contact with our Young People (or stay over at camps) are required to have an enhanced DBS (although some minor offences might pop up, its not always going to be an issue & its all confidential). We all need to undertake mandatory training relating to safety & safeguarding plus first aid every few years. In addition there’s also other training relating to our role(s)….. however, this doesn’t make us experts in these fields (although for some it might be their day job). often, it ensuring we know there’s a process to follow – which one & when!… but don’t let it put you off volunteering, its not too onerous!
