Welcome To The 47th Cardiff Young Leaders

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 47th Cardiff Scout Group and introduce ourselves.

Gill the Group Scout Leader and our Group Leaders are Andrew (Chil), Lorraine (Akela), Nick (King Louie), Stephen (Shere-khan), Nadia (Baloo) and Fiona (Raksha) are our Occasional Helpers.

Every week we assist at another section helping the young people there to achieve anything the young person’s set their minds to and having lots of fun along the way. They will get the opportunity to try lots of different fun activities such as hiking, exploring and camping, giving them the chance to experience a range of outdoor activities and develop valuable scouting skills all whilst working towards badges, including the highest awards available to Young Leaders.

Currently the young leaders don’t meet on a weekly basis as a unit but we still get involved with the younger sections and you can find their times below:

  • Scouts run on a Monday for young people between the age of 10 1/2-14 at 6-8pm,
  • Beavers run on a Tuesday for young people between the age of 6 – 8 at 5.30-7pm,
  • Cubs run on a Thursday for young people between the age of 8 – 10 1/2 at 6-8pm.

All of the above meet in the same place at the 47th Cardiff Scout Hut, behind 177 Cowbridge Rd West, CF5 5TB.

We will occasionally arrange activities/events away from our own hut and run joint events with other sections in the group, but you would be notified in advance of this.

As a new starter your young person is welcome to attend meetings for four weeks so they can see whether they enjoy it. Once they have decided to join the group, you will need to buy uniform, and they will participate in an investiture ceremony (which parents/guardian are welcome to attend).

Unlike the other youth sections – Beavers, Cubs & Scouts – our Young leaders don’t need to pay subs as they are paid for by the group, however you can choose to donate some money to help out our unit. There may be additional payments for other optional events or activities throughout the year which you will be made are of in advance.

Once your young person is invested, you as a parent automatically become members of the group committee. As with all voluntary organisations we rely heavily on fundraising to enable the scouting activities to be maintained and developed. You will be asked occasionally to help and support these fundraising incentives, making it possible for your young person to get the most from scouting, please don’t leave this to the few, remember many hands make light work.

Our Group Board of Trustees consists of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, the Group Scout Leader, all Group Leaders and parent representatives from each section. The group exec meets roughly 3-4 times a year and is responsible for management of group property, fundraising, and the management of the group finance.

I hope you and your young person/s enjoy your time with the group.

Yours in Scouting,

47th Cardiff Scout Group Leaders.
